Wrexham v West Ham Utd FA Cup 3rd Rd 1996/97

The worst cup exit thread got me thinking back to games that I attended that I forgot about until thinking back to when I used to go to most games home and away.

Originally I wasn't going to this but a mate of mine dropped out going with another mate due to being really ill so I had his ticket and went instead.

What a day!

Mate decided to drive, we were 4 hours in to the journey and the car broke down. Called AA got it sorted and was on our way again - to cut a long story short we left at stupid o'clock and must have been on the road for about 8 hours so luckily made KO in time.

I remember getting into the ground and it was freezing and hostile even though only around 10,000 were there I think. I went to get a tea and pie, pies had run out and tea was not even drinkable.

When HUGO PORFIRIO scored I jumped so high excitedly I landed on my ankle and twisted it.

Game ended, walk back to the car in agony and on the way home it swelled up so badly I was almost in tears. Mate dropped me off at the old King George Hospital A&E in Ilford and found out I chipped a bone - was given crutches and pain medication.

Bearing in mind the journey there and back I don't think I slept for around 2 days.

To sum it up, nightmare journey, no food or drink, freezing cold, injured myself, shit journey (in pain) home, visit to A&E and no sleep.

Still, happy memories (sort of)

Who else went to this game and what are your memories?

Didn't go to this, or the replay for reasons that are lost in the mists of time.

Did go to the game against Leeds in between though.

I remember being in the Queens and listening to two semi-literates talking about the the Ra-ke-course Ground.

Those were the days, when semi-literates could afford to follow us. At most, now we only get dyslexics...

It was touch or go whether it was on and I was at Euston with a mate and about 30 other WH waiting to see if it was worth getting the first train up, I rang Wrexham who said it was on, spread the word, and the three OB in attendance declared the train 'dry', ha ha. Some civilian with no connection to the match had his ciders taken away minutes into the journey by the OB who came on with us. Got to Chester for the change and the pub outside the station was rammed with WH from all over. Had a drink all over Wrexham with no issues and only remember the orange ball and Profiterole spoiling the Taff's party in a draw. The midweek replay was postponed just before KO because of fog. It was eventually played on a Saturday when the fourth round was taking place, which I didn't go to as I was getting married in Islington. I'm now getting married again on Friday 13 April to a Norwich girl, wonder what football memories I'll have in 20 year's time as an old boy?

I remember it well, cleared the penalty areas of snow, rest of the pitch covered, lines marked out in blue paint!
I took my son who was 10 or 11 to his first away game, a steward let us into the West Ham end for a fiver into his back pocket.
Superb Porfirio goal to rescue a point - I think it may have been his first game for us.
On the way home the car broke down and we walked to a hotel to call my Missus who came out in her car to tow us! We live in the West Country incidentally so not all the way back to London!!
Big domestic on the side of the road as first she wanted to tow, then wanted to be towed, then didn’t want to play at all. Looking back she had a point.
My Son went on to support Villa sparing himself the agony of being a West Ham fan like his Dad until recent times.
Happy days, err, no, not really

I remember this match well. The Mrs and I were sitting in the very front row right in the centre above the scoreboard. The best view I’ve ever had at a match except for the play off final against Preston.

It's a shame that our fans can't group together to protest against these bunch of lying cheapskate wankers running the club now.

I went to this game ticketless, was loitering out side the away end when a copper grabbed hold of me and said right I’m nicking you if you don’t go in the ground.. I can’t I’ve got no ticket! Right in my face he said this is your last chance, which is it? At this point he then pulls out a ticket for the west ham end and sent me on my way. You don’t meet many like him!

Went away to Wrexham mid week for a cup game. Don't think it was this one tho. Was there another one early 90's maybe?

I was at the replay at our gaff.

0-1. We were absolutely fucking woeful.

Our fans invaded the pitch afterwards to have a pop at the cheapskate wanker Brown... Not too long after we signed Lomas, Hartson and Kitson who kept us up.

It's a shame that our fans can't group together to protest against these bunch of lying cheapskate wankers running the club now.

I remember losing to Spurs, Stockport, Chelsea and then the replay of this in just over a month or so.

TOUGH few weeks in SCHOOL tbh.
